Wedding Photography awards are a funny thing. They don’t really mean much in the real world of wedding photography or at least they shouldn’t. What makes a good wedding photographer is their consistency to produce great images throughout the wedding day and for that final set of images to tell the story of a couples special day. Good wedding photography isn’t just about one or two award winning images from the day. So when judging a wedding photographers work, always ask to see some full weddings. A good wedding photographer should have a consistent style, that continues through the whole set of images – not just one or two special images.
However, having said all of that. Who doesn’t like to win an award? Carol and I certainly do. Especially when those awards come from well respected organisations in the wedding industry. Our awards cabinet has expanded a little more this year, as when we have time, we do like to enter some images in the competitions that go on throughout the year. We are fortunate enough to have been awarded for our images by Fearless Photographers, The International Society of Wedding Photographers (ISPWP), The Wedding Photojournalist Association (WPJA), NineDots (Wedding Photography Community) and the Master of Wedding Photography (UK & IE).
Awards are great – but Awards aren’t wedding photography. To truly judge a wedding photographers work, look for consistency and style over a number of recent weddings. That’s the true mark of great photographers, being able to reproduce superb work at every wedding regardless of the location, the weather or any other factors.
